House hunting
The UKC Accommodation Office has produced a set of guidelines
outlining issues involved in renting off campus accommodation. These
provide useful information particularly for students who will be house hunting for
their first time this year. Do take time to read them.
Property viewings
Please respect the
privacy of current tenants and make an appointment to view by contacting me
first.
Be organized in a group before you view. Ensure that you can trust
each other and are confident you will get on well together living under the
same roof!
Get all of your group members together for our appointment. I
shall need to meet you and you will need to see the accommodation and raise
queries re letting terms, property management etc before a decision to proceed
can be made.
If your plans change please let me know as soon as possible so
that I may offer your appointment to another group.
Signing up
When I find a group of students I like (and they like one of my houses!) I usually want to sign an Assured Shorthold Tenancy Agreement with them very quickly. This is because just as students would not wish to lose the opportunity to secure a nice house, landlords do not wish to lose a good group of tenants.
The period between viewing and signing up often takes no more
than 24 hours. During this time I encourage students to check out my Tenancy
Agreements with the Students
To be ready to complete the formalities all students need to be available at the appointed time to sign the Assured Shorthold Tenancy Agreement and pay a deposit.
